“Where You Are” from Moana with Alex Boyé

If you love Moana, you’ll love this video! If you love Alex Boyé and Moana, you’ll really love this video!

During the 2017 Pioneer Day concert with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, guest artist Alex Boyé made his entrance to the Conference Center stage and performed “Where You Are” from the Disney animated film Moana. The song was already in place for the original guest artist, Christopher Jackson, who performed the song on the film’s soundtrack; but from Boyé’s energetic performance, it seemed tailor-made for him.

In an age of record-low album sales, the soundtrack for Moana is only one of three 2017 soundtracks to surpass sales of 500,000 copies, which says a lot about the music it contains. In the movie Moana (spoiler alert!), the song “Where You Are” occurs when Moana finds out she is expected to become the chief of her village when she grows up. It is sung by her father, Chief Tui, who tries to convince Moana that all the happiness she needs is right “where you are” in the village.

Prior to this Pioneer Day concert performance, Boyé has recorded a number of Disney songs, including “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid,Circle of Life” from The Lion King, and “Let It Go” from Frozen. His cover of “Let It Go” was named YouTube’s Best Pop Cover of 2014 and currently has close to 90 million views.
