n July 17th, 2004, 97-year-old
Margarete
Stahl Wilken Hicken was honored at a
commemorative concert celebrating the
75th anniversary of Music and the
Spoken Word. Margarete
joined the Choir in 1929 as a young,
single immigrant from
Germany. She spent her
first years in Salt Lake City living
at the Beehive House, the former home
of President Brigham Young, which had
been converted to a rooming house for
young women.
While Mrs. Hicken did not sing in the
first broadcast (July 15, 1929), she
was on hand in 1930 for the Centennial
celebration of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She has fond memories of Choir tours
to the Chicago Worlds Fair and San
Diego’s Balboa Park. She
left the Choir upon her marriage in
the late 1930’s and has resided in
Salt Lake City since that
time. She is a great fan of
the Choir and watches the Sunday
morning broadcast every week.
